Agricultural Production

Windy Station is first and foremost a working farm. Our 60,000 acres on the Liverpool Plains support year-round agricultural production that balances commercial viability with environmental stewardship.

Climate

Windy Station experiences variable seasonal conditions across the Liverpool Plains. Summer rainfall sees peaks of ~ 78mm in January, while winter rainfull sits around 40mm per month on average. Maximum temperatures range from 32-38°C on average in summer to 17-20°C in winter. Annual rainfall patterns directly influence our cropping and livestock operations.

Cropping

We farm 13,000 hectares using modern rotation agricultural production systems. Practices include minimum tillage, controlled traffic farming, and block efficiencies to optimise productivity. Current technology includes Weedit systems, variable rate application, and infrastructure improvements. Future considerations include autonomous vehicles to further enhance operational efficiency.

Environment

Enterprise management encompasses pastures, grazing management, minimum till cropping, and controlled traffic farming. Current projects include koala habitat establishment and management, riparian area fencing and stock exclusion, tree planting, and native vegetation management.

Livestock

Our operation runs 65,000 DSE, approximately 2,500 breeding females comprised of Angus and Hereford genetics. Spring calving occurs in September, with cows mated for six weeks. Heifers are mated for three weeks to calve at two years old. We aim to turn off steers at over 450kg by 15 months to feedlot markets. We strive to be the best part of a cow’s day.

Our Vision

Financially, the business funds annual operations from cashflow and provides owners a long-term return on assets of greater than 4% per annum. Capital expenditure and provisioning for future events are funded from retained cashflow.

Environmentally, the business grazes livestock and grows crops without adverse effect on landscape integrity. We improve soil health, arrest and repair soil erosion, and maintain or improve native flora and fauna diversity. We remain vigilant with respect to noxious weeds and pests, employing appropriate eradication or control programs.

Socially, Windy Station maintains excellent community relations and always operates with consideration to community welfare. People are our business, and we always act with their safety and wellbeing in mind. Livestock production does not occur at the expense of animal welfare.
