Preg Testing at Windy

23 February, 2026

Preg testing is always a milestone in the production calendar, and this year delivered results that reflect the consistency and effort invested across the program.

January saw the 2024 drop heifers preg tested, with a PTIC result of 69.5 percent. The result was warmly received by the team, particularly given the close margin between farms. With less than a percentage separating outcomes, the healthy rivalry continues to drive strong management focus across the board.

The heifers presented in excellent order. They were heavier and more uniform than anticipated, a credit to pasture management, nutrition and joining preparation.

Following testing, 152 lighter end heifers were sent to the feedlot to maximise their performance potential. The 206 PTE heifers will remain on farm, with the intention of finishing them for an MSA focused slaughter market. This decision supports both herd structure and market alignment moving forward.

In early February, the 2023 drop females were preg tested at Windy. As second calvers, they are often considered the most challenging group to get back in calf. With that in mind, an 88 percent PTIC result was extremely satisfying.

Given the strong performance and current herd structure, we are taking the opportunity to refine the breeding direction further. Several Hereford females will be culled to maintain a predominantly black baldie and Angus base within the herd.

The pregnant 2023 females have since transitioned to Mandeville, where they will spend the year ahead on quality pasture.

The 2022 and 2021 cows also returned strong results in the high 80 percent range after a six week joining. Analysing the link between joining history, body condition and PTIC outcomes continues to guide our decision making and management strategies.

With preg testing for 2026 now complete, the focus shifts to processing weaners. The pregnant cows will remain on pasture through to September, when calving begins and the next generation arrives.

Strong reproductive performance underpins the entire operation. These results are a clear indicator that attention to detail, herd structure and long term planning are delivering measurable outcomes.
